SAINT ANGEL CASTLE
Emperor Hadrian's tomb, converted into a fortress,
it became a military key for more than a thousand years. It was
believed that the vision of the archangel Michael on its summit
had led to the end of the pestilence in 590 and from this miraculous
event the castle derived its name. Converted into a dungeon in the
Middle ages (among the prisoners Cellini, Giordano Bruno, Beatrice
Cenci and Cagliostro). It became a shelter for the popes connected
by a passageway to the Vatican. The papal apartments are magnificent
(frescoes by pupils of Raphael). The views over Rome are breathtaking!
